Studies of Postcastrational Adrenal Cortical Changes

چکیده

The gonadotropins produced by the adenohy pophysis control the section of ovarian steroids which feed back to regulate the secretion of the adenohypophysis. In some animals this homeo static ability is so highly developed that the re moval of the ovaries results not only in increased gonadotropin secretion but in the eventual conver sion of the adrenal cortex into a secretor of sex steroids which are ordinarily associated with the gonad. Histologic changes in the adrenal which we associate with sex hormone secretion in the mouse (6) have been reported following gonadectomy in the dog (7), guinea pig (28), hamster (18, 25), rat (14, 15), and goat (2@). The induction of these morphologic changes and subsequent sex hormone secretion followingonadectomysuggeststhatthe increase in gonadotropin following castration might be responsible forthe adrenalreorganiza tion. This hypothesishas been supportedby the demonstrationthat injections of both androgen (18,24)and estrogen(24)willpreventpostcastra tional nodular hyperplasia. Hypophysectomy will also prevent nodular hyperplasia (8). Since the pituitary produces a variety of hormones, it is nec essaryalsotoruleout theroleof ACTH and a di rect effect of lack of estrogen or androgen upon the

Differences in adrenal responsiveness to postcastrational alteration as evidenced by transplanted adrenal tissue.

INTRODUCTION In inbred strains of mice the removal of the gonads is followed by one of three different types of histolÃ3gica! response on the part of the adrenal cortex. In most strains, some months after gonadectomy typical hyperplastic changes in the adrenal cortex develop, and these altered cortices may then produce significant amounts of sex steroids (4, 5, 6, 12, 14). In some animals of th...

A Report on Adrenal Gland Estrogens and Manifestations of Femininity

It has been shown and confirmed that adrenal cortical tumours synthesize and secrete oestrogens more than normal adrenals and eventually produce feminization in some cases.  In addition to the above mentioned findings the lack of conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone has been shown to be the main biochemical disorder which causes the lack of hair growth in public area in some ca...

P29: Changes in Thickness and Intelligence

Neuroimaging research indicates that human intellectual ability is associated to brain structure including the thickness of the cerebral cortex. Most studies show that general intelligence is positively associated with cortical thickness in areas of association cortex allocated throughout both brain hemispheres. Changes in cortical thickness over time have been related to intelligence, but whet...

The Incidence of Adrenal Cortical Carcinoma in Gonadectomized Female Mice of the Extreme Dilution Strain I. Observations on the Adrenal Cortex*

For some time now studies have been in progress in this laboratory on the relation of gonadectomy to changes in the adrenal cortex and to the development of the secondary sex organs that occurs following certain changes in the cortex. In the dilute brown strain of mice (JAX dba), nodular hyperplasia of the adrenal cortex following gonadectomy has been observed and described (12, 31, 33). This c...
